Hello
I have just purchased a new mountain bike and I want to buy a lock for it.
I have been on a few sites and have had mixed reviews regarding the steel cable locks and the d-lock, locks.
I was hoping someone could give me some advise and names of good quality bike locks.
Thanks

Might be a better place to ask - although I'm sure if someone here knows, they will advise you.0 -
The standard rating comparison is by Sold Secure, and I would not think of getting a lock with a rating lower than Silver certificate, and preferably Gold. The 'catalogue' is downloaded using http://www.soldsecure.com/wp-content/uploads/Catalogue_2008_Website.pdf (they couldn't be bothered to change the link, but it's really the 2011 version).
Otherwise Google for something like Bike Lock Guide. Here's one result http://www.londoncyclist.co.uk/secure/bike-lock-guide/.
Adequate locks are NOT cheap...0 -
Depends on the risks as well, like where it will be left, for how long, and how desirable the bike is.
I have an expensive bike but I never leave it anywhere it can be got at, it's either at work in a badge-locked shed with CCTV, or it's in my locked shed behind locked gates! I still have a basic cable lock that I put around both wheels and through a solid post/anchor though.
I'd suggest as a minimum if it's out and about to have a D-lock through the frame and around something solid like a lamp post, plus a cable lock or chain through at least the front wheel and frame - preferably both wheels and frame and around the immovable object. The cable/chain needs to be off the ground as well.Trev. Having an out-of-money experience!

I have a D-Lock, it is certified as being unable to be cut through by bolt cutters etc. Make sure you lock it to something secure though, I have seen more than one bike locked throught he frame to a post that's about 3 ft high where even I could lift it off the post and be away with it if I were that way inclined. A lot does depend on where you leave it though, I have accidentally left my bike unlocked more than once and come back to find it still there so not too bad round here, though admittedly even I wouldn't steal it these days! I see a lot of people with decent bikes take the front wheel (quick release) with them when they leave the bike, but that is not the most expensive part of the bike and would not stop someone putting the bike into a car and buying a new wheel. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

A bloke I new painted his new bike all over in hippy dippy flowers/colours, on the assumption that no one would be seen dead on it - so far so good, after twenty years.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Hi Jai,
I use a Squire Paramount Plus D lock, cost me £30 from Halfords several years ago and has given me very good service, just looked on google and found good reviews of it, but costing £50:(.
One thing to note though, its very heavy at about 2kg. I'm used to it now. Its a good size so it allows me to lock my bike to something immovable, which is always advisable where i live in Stockport. Also try and lock your bike somewhere people can see it, bike thieves dont like an audience:j
Hope that helps,
Muirbabe
Sorry, I have now found that this lock may not be available, I could'nt find it on sale anywhere. However I did find this one on Amazon; 'Squire Challenger D Lock 260' for £18.57 including postage that may be worth checking out, its reduced from £28.990
