old bank accounts?

HI,
Can someone point me in the right direction to find out if an old bank account is still open.
I used to have accounts at 3 different places - and having divorced and moved a few times I can't remember if I actually closed the accounts. I think I did, but I want to check. (Old post office accounts with the blue passbook, abbey national, and first direct) It was the first direct charge news that made me think about the old accounts.
So where do I start? Hope someone can help.

If you know which banks I suggest you contact them first.
If you have no luck there try the BBA dormant account tracer
