Please Help

I received a letter from a car insurance company today, stating that I owe them £256 for a cancelled policy. I have only used this company once, about 5 years ago and I have never owned the car that the policy was covering.

Please help I don't know what to do :(

Ask them for proof in writing.

Ask for proof but do not acknowledge the debt.

Have you moved by any chance?
I'm just wondering whether you had a policy on "auto-renew" and you didn't get the letters and didn't pay and eventually they cancelled it through lack of payment.
Another alternative is that it's a mistake and you do not owe the money.

But they need to prove it.

It's unlikely to be auto renew if you never owned the car.
Contact them, deny the debt, and ask for details as to why they belive it was you. Put any communication in writing, even if it just to confirm a phone calll.
Post back up if you need more help after.

Ask them for proof that you owe them that amount of money but don’t acknowledge it, they should provide you with full info on how you got that debt in the first place.

Quicker and easier to phone them making a complaint that they are chasing for a premium in respect of a car you have never owned. Either they have made a mistake or someone has been Insuring a car in your name.

Don't forget to check your credit record with the credit reference agencies, just in case the debt has been noted. Experian and Equifax offer free trials, if you remember to cancel before you end up in a subscription.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

OP hasn't been back since she registered and posted this on 7 May, so you might be wasting your time.

Fair comment for anyone searching a similar situation to theirs, though.
