Both tyre and chain should last much longer on a 125. Worn sprockets will wear the chain, both need regular lubrication and correct adjustment. Rear tyre may wear quickly if you are relying on the rear brake instead of using the front brake.

There are bike chain cleaners you can use buy putting the bike on the centre stand or if you don't have one a rear paddock stand

The cleaner contains brushes and you put degreaser in it and turn the back wheel to pull the chain through it.
To lube is the same procedure

    D'Oh!!

As per Igol - I use a Scottoiler, and my last bike (a 1300) had well over 20,000 on the original chain when I sold it. If you're riding in all weathers it really does make a difference.

Rear tyres on most 125s really shouldn't be an issue - as someone else said, excessive reliance on the rear brake might be the cause.

Another thought - do you tend to use the gears to slow down rather than brakes? Maybe, just maybe, you're putting stress through the drivetrain which is wearing both the chain and the tyre. Having said that, I've never heard of that happening and on a 125 it doesn't seem likely.

How often do you adjust and tighten your chain?

As well as lubrication, this needs to be done regularly and if not, a slack chain will knacker itself and the sprockets in no time at all.

A chain and sprocket set, if looked after properly (adjusted correctly and lubricated regularly) should last a lot longer than 3000 odd miles, if the manufacturer fitted good quality chain and sprockets when the bike was produced. Have you taken it somewhere else to get a second opinion?

told the chain was 'tight' I do spray dry lube on it quite often though...
Are you confusing "tight" with overtightened?. The chain should have been checked and adjusted correctly during the service, use this as a future reference as to how much slack there needs to be. Your manual should show the correct adjustment.
