Income Based JSA

My brother has just gone onto JSA (Income based).
He was on JSA (Contribution based).
He was made redundant, and then became a single parent.
Whilst employed he had an industrial accident losing the top of his thumb, he gets an allowance for that of about £30 week, (he got this even when he was working)
Since going onto JSA (Income based) he has been told that this money is classed as income, and had been deducted from his JSA amount, he is struggling to bring up 2 school aged children, pay a mortgage and run a house, surely this is incorrect ? Is he missing out on anything, any help gratefully received he has a meeting with the Jobcentre next week, and would like to be prepared.

How old are the children?
Does he have savings?
Partner?
Whats the source of the monies from the thumb?
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -
Thanks for your help.
He gets Child Tax Credits and Family Allowance (he was getting these before anyway) No mention of help with Mortgage interest, so I will get him to ask about that. His main concern was his circumstances have not changed only the type of JSA he collects and his money has gone downSam:happylove0 -
Thank you
He did not know about at the school dinner, health costs, council tax help I will pass this onto him. He has a mortgage so thought he would only be eligible if he rented.Sam:happylove0 -
Thanks very much.
Children are 13 and 15
He has no savings, he has used his redundancy to live whilst his wife was still with him, as she refused to pay any bills even though he was not working....the money has run out...and now so has she, leaving him with the children. The money for his thumb was given to him as the result of an industrial injury, and the government/ pay it..as compensation sort of in case he has problems finding work because of it...Sam:happylove0 -

Get him to put his details into the benefits calculators on turn2us and direct.gov.uk to get an idea what he should be claiming.
