Hello nice motoring people,

I am on the scrounge for any helpful tips/advice if you would be so kind.

Okay down to business: Display on dashboard kept flashing "Plip battery spent" when starting the car, so I changed the battery in the keyfob. Was fine for about a week then the 20amp ignition fuse blew, car wouldn't start, changed fuse worked again. Just went out for petrol this afternoon and again the car wouldn't start fuse blown again, changed fuse started again.

Fuse only seems to last 6 days then it blows any ideas as to what the problem is and whether I can fix it. Or will I have to spend a fortune and take it to the garage.

Thanks Kindly.

seems to me theres a short in the wiring somewhere along the line. are all the grounding points under the bonnets good? fuse box ground, battery grounds ok. check behind the stereo also for any loose connections, and check the ignition barrel wires itself (taking off the stearing column covers).

if you cant find anything untoward in those area's then taking it to an autolecky rather than a indi garage should save you a bit.

but the solution i have come accross in the past is that the comm 2000 behind the steering wheel sometimes fail intermitantly, (the lights indicator wiper stalk connection block)

also check that the starter motor and alternator all have good contacts.

    Thank you Atrix.

A little more :rotfl: Just back had to go and collect stuff, stupid, stupid thing didn't start again! The fuses x3 20amps blew straight away just turning the key. Ended up putiing a 30amp fuse in start up and I just bloody drove home. Switched off the engine and tried to turn it on again and the 30amp fuse blew. At least the dam thing is at home now.

NEVER EVER EVER PUT A HIGHER RATED FUSE IN WHEN THEY KEEP ON BLOWING. NOT EVER. Whilst it may seem a good idea, you can send your car up in flames quite easily.

If its blowing 20A fuses, it is doing it for a reason - drawing more than 20A is quite significant. I once had a car come into the garage where I was working as an auto electrician. It had kept blowing fuses so they did what you did and put larger and larger ones in, eventually putting a bolt in the fuse holder. It arrived at our place on the back of a car transporter as not running. When I looked at the wiring loom, the entire wiring loom had melted into one massive long blob of molten plastic and copper and it was obvious that some of it had been alight at some point and the person driving at the time being completely unaware of that.

The cost of the repair was several hundred quid. And the cause? The moron owner had fitted a high visibility brake light and fed it from the rear light cluster with twin core cable. When he'd put the cluster back on, the wire to the brake light had got trapped and the screw to hold the cluster in place went straight through the middle creating a dead short.

You obviously haven't seen just how quickly a car can go up in flames.

What year is it, and is it petrol or diesel.
It will be hard to find the fault, until it fails permanently.
The 30A fuse was probably a red herring, if that blew as well eventually.

Does the fuse blow when you turn the ignition on, or does it blow when you actually start to crank the engine over?
