in Cutting tax
I have just received a letter off the tax office telling me my tax code is changing. I work for the local County Council, and have done so for the last 13 years and have never had a new tax code in that time.
I am now being put onto BR code paying 20% of my income.
Does anyone know if this seems right.......Have I always paid 20% of my income......no idea what my previous tax code was.........Can anyone offer any advice??????

Can you look at your last couple of wage slips and tell us what code is shown on those.
Have you by any chance just started to draw a pension, as well as still working?
Do you have more than one job or source of income? If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me!

yes it is 747L/0
No I have not started to draw a pension....but have done a miniscule amount of overtime.......which was only a 1 off.....I work in a school so overtime isnt something we usually don't get paid for
Is 20% the norm???????0 -

It won't matter if you get paid for overtime or not as you still only have one employer. Is 20% the norm???????
The BR code is only used if you have more than one source of income - i.e. another job or a pension.
What did the letter telling you about the code change say?0 -
what was your taxcode in March 2011? or on your P60 if you have it.0

not had my p60 yet but on my wage slips my tax code was 7471/0
my letter says
Cumbria County council need a tax code so they can work out how much tax to take off the payments they make to you. We have asked CCC to use code BR this year which means you will pay tax at 20%0 -

747L is the tax code for this year unless you just happened to have £1000 extra allowances which is unlikely although possible.
March was the previous tax year and would have had 647L as standard.my letter says

OK doesn't really explain. My guess is that they think you have another job somewhere.
Phone up HMRC and ask.0 -
This is yet another tax office !!!! up, they think you have 2 jobs. Phone them up and they will correct it, hopefully before next payday.0

I do pay into the CCC pension but always have.......and the overtime I have done was with with CCC anyway. I have no other form of income......I am about to take a wage cut of more than 1/3 due to Single Status being implemented so will earn less money this year......0

It could very well be an employer !!!! up.This is yet another tax office !!!! up, they think you have 2 jobs. Phone them up and they will correct it, hopefully before next payday.
It's amazing how many employees of various companies have a different staff number from year to year shown on their P60's. This causes the system to set up a new employment as it beleives that it is different from the one held on record.
I see no reason why an employees staff/payroll number should change from year to year.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.
