Help, my darling Dell Latitiude D505 appears to be on it's last legs and I can't afford to replace it or it's internal organs? It takes up to 10 minutes sometimes to load up anything and it appears to be getting worse! I have checked it for viruses and it appears to be ok - it's just very old! (a bit like it's owner!). I only use it for surfing the net and correspondence!

I am a total philistine with computers so I can't tell you anything about it apart from I run xp and mail is through Modzilla - I defragded it this morning and it shows I have almost 70% space (if that helps!). I warn you I'm blonder than Marilyn so I need simple language and no shouting please!

Also, just take each step one at a time - it's not as scary as it looks :)

Make sure you look for the commit charge and post here before you make any changes, as it gives very useful information on why your machine might be slow. After you make changes, you can then compare them.

When you press CTRL ALT DEL, then select Task Manager, then 'Performance', the figures we' after look something like this:

I'm assuming it low on RAM...

On the keyboard, press the Flying Windows Key in conjunction with the Pause Break key and report back as to how much RAM is installed.

We''ll see that on the TM anyway. :)

Dell Latitude D505....it'll be 512MB tops then. Lack of RAM is the biggest issue it has. Sadly RAM for that is quite expensive due to the age.

Defrag is a waste of time.

Cleanup the startup bloat and toolbars as above, scan with malwarebytes, replace av with avast 6 free, install cleanmem and it should run like new
