Getting connected to gas and the National Grid

Just wondered if anyone has had any experience of getting connected to gas and how long it has taken. We have filled in our application and submitted it online, the National grid have taken our payment and then following a call to them - they have informed us that it will take eight - ten weeks to get connected. This is fine although we needed connecting yesterday, what infuriates me is that they have already taken the money is this right?

Can't speak for NG (our area is covered by WWU), but if they work to the same standards:

    8/3/11 Application submitted online
    16/3/11 Quote from WWU.
    17-18/3/11 Faxed acceptance
20/4/11 Installation date (completed making good driveway over next 7 days or so, because of bank holiday)

Then add another 2-7 days to get utility company to send in someone to fit the gas meter.

They too took money before installation.

Sounds about right for Southern Gas networks, though we had xmas in the middle.
