Unemployment Insurance & redundancy while on maternity

Hi, I wonder if someone can help.
My wife has just had our first child and prior to this was given compulsory redundancy as her job was being relocated and when assessed was not suitable for my wife to return to work after her maternity leave. My wife will be getting paid OMP up until 15 May 2011 from her employer and will then receive SMP until December. She will also get paid 12 months salary as a redundancy package.
We have an unemployment insurance policy in place where we would get payout in the case of either one of us losing our job. We advised the insurance company that my wife was being made redundant and was sent out a claim form. Within this claim form they request details from her employer about her termination of employment.
And then there was a form that needs to be filled out by the Job Centre. This is where the problems start. On contacting the Job Centre they said that in order for them to fill in that section of the form my wife would need to apply for Job Seekers Allowance and would need to be available for work! Now my wife with a 7 week old baby is in no way available for work let alone job interviews. Therefore we cannot get this part of the form filled in and hence not able to submit a claim on our insurance.
On reading the terms & conditions it does state that in order to qualify you ust be registered for work. However nowhere does it state anything about being on maternity leave or receiving SMP or Maternity Allowance. Now our insurer is not aware of my wife having had a baby and as yet we have not mentioned it.
What I would like to know is where would stand if we were to contact the insurer and made them aware of my wife's situation and would we be able to make our claim?
If we cannot claim now can we submit our claim come Janaury once the SMP finishes and my wife can apply for Job Seekers Allowance as we did inform the insurer that my wife was being made redundant within in the 120 days of the date of the event for which is the claim is being made
Any help or advice (if you are able to understand that all!) would be much appreciated
