A friend of my took a brainstorm, went down to Argos and bought himself a broadband wireless router.. a cable broadband router.
The nearest cable network is 50 miles away.
Argos won't let him return it because it's used.
Is this one for Ebay or is there some manner of conversion hardware that can be used to convert it for ordinary telephone broadband

Not sure on legal standpoint with Argos if it's the buyer's fault it isn't fit for purpose. No way you can convert it I'm afraid (as far as I know). If there was such a thing I'm sure it would be cheaper just to buy a proper router in the first place."She is quite the oddball. Good point although I assume assistant meant that the fact it was opened but I thought Argos had a 30 day satisfactory guarantee or something."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Seen a Buffalo kit ( recent tesco deal) that was an adsl modem box, which then fitted to a cable router, so therefore the adapter is out there- although personally I thought it was a mess.....
take it back and explain / ask for exchange ... this is a very common errorAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
From argos site: "Most things we sell are covered by our 16-day money-back guarantee. Just return them to any store, unused, in their original undamaged packaging, in a saleable condition, along with the receipt* and we'll give you a refund. "
So even though it is opened and as Lorian said it's impossible for it to have been used (that's the reason it's being returned!!!) your friend is entitled to a refund (if within 16 days)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Do you know which router it was out of interest?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Is this a wireless router? Are you sure that it's unsuitable for ADSL?
I've never seen a cable-specific wireless router, just a router without a built in modem, which connects to the Ethernet port on the cable modem. I have one of these myself. It's not specifically sold as a router for a cable modem but it's obviously ideal for the purpose.
As far as I know, one of these could also be used to connect to the Ethernet ports on some wired ADSL modem/routers. Not the ideal solution for your friend, as he'll have two bits of kit where one would do, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
That said, I thought Argos had a 16-day money back guarantee. It may be your friend's mistake but it's a very easy one to make. As he's discovered, he would be better off with a combined ADSL modem and router.0 -
