What happens if you recieve a replacement V5C for a lost one and someone fills out the "change of keeper" section of the original?

Would it be recognised as invalid?

the DVLA will send a basic standard "letter of aknowledgement" to the current reg'd keeper to say something like "thankyou for letting us know you are no longer the reg'd keeper of the motor ve-hickle XXXXXXX. If you havent requested a change in keeper details please contact us ASAP..." etc etc...

I think you have 14 days to contact them to say you havent sold the car or changed keeper details. If you dont respond then they will issue a new reg doc to whose ever name it got filled out in.

harveybobbles is right, but if you don't respond to the letter from DVLA you also receive a fine. This is for not notifying DVLA via the correct procedure that you are no longer the keeper of the vehicle.

There is a chance that the DVLA will pick up on the fact that a more recent (duplicate) V5C has been issued. If so, DVLA will write back to the new keeper applicant and explain the V5C is no longer valid.

Saying all of that, it is highly unlikely someone would attempt to register a car in their own name, if they didn't have the actual car. They are basically running the risk of parking fines, speeding tickets etc. coming in the post addressed to them.

If they fill out the old one they should notice that the document reference and issue number are incorrect and thus not do anything.

It's the DVLA though, so the post above is probably just as likely.

My biggest concern is that with a V5C registered in a different name it is extremely easy to obtain keys (and then with the address on the old one, to tell where the car is parked :rotfl:)
