For sure, re the reading up on it doesn't mean she knows how to do it, she wasn't trying to pretend she did, but she had at least bothered to find out what the job might involve. She's still going to need the full training.

the chances of us finding someone locally who already knows how to do this (and also is able to do the other aspects of the job) are slim - but it's not rocket science, anyone with the right quals/experience can be quickly trained in it. This is what we've done successfully before
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

Strider, if I were in he same position as your friend, my attitude would be "you're the Grad, go work it out for yourself", then fire-off a quick email to both the head and chair of govaners pointing-out the fact she is to stupid to even know how to re-install Windows (God help her if she was tasked with doing a re-image from a network server).

As for candidates for the job, I was put forward for a job I had no previous knowledge or exp. on. The company saw something in me that I had not, and promptly offered me the job.

Tonight, another window of opportunity has opened-up in the IT sector (have years of exp., loads of qualies, but never worked the industry other than for myself).

I went for a job interview on Wednesday and did just that. Read up all about the manufacturing site I was going to and all about the new parent company that took over a few years back.......

.......only to be told at the interview that the website was out of date and they had, in actual fact, been taken over by someone else again!

You really can't win some days.

However, I did get some brownie points for travelling to the site the day before to see where the interview was going to be.

Bitter experience has taught me that. Work out where you are going, how to get there and how long it's going to be.

And a 'dry run' with your clothes as well, wouldn't go amiss. I've had a couple of wardrobe malfunctions before now. :o

That's awful for you! I can't understand why companies don't keep their website up to date!

I agree there are some places I don't have a clue and need a test drive up there!
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T

That would be the initial response, but all that would happen is he'd get accused of feeling his job was under threat and possibly behaving in a sexist manner.

How do you explain what someone can/can't do in a technical capacity, to people or a boss who have/has no technical knowledge themselves?

It's like complaining to the colour blind boss of a painter/decorator company, that his staff have painted your house bright pink.
“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Whats the point of this thread?
We interviewed 6 people, all very similar in qualifications and experience. On paper, nothing between them.

    Nice number...
one had a fit of nerves and walked out

Obviously wasnt going to get the job...
3 knew absolutely zilch about area x and didn't even know what it was.

So 4 weak candidates so far... 3 of which not knowing what the job was to involve.
    1 had heard of it.

Strong candidate - with training could be good.
1 hadn't heard of it before applying, but had researched it on the internet

Strong candidate - honest and researched - with training could be good.
That was the person who got the job.

I don't want to get anyones backs up here (especially OP), but surely its obvious... out of elimination it was down to the final 2. (Could argue why half got invited without knowing anything about it but they could have lied/distorted truth for all I know or assumed to know) The final 2 was one person who knew of it and one who didn't before researching it. Its a 50/50 chance - and other factors such as presentation, personality, confidence etc. involved could have moved it either way.

Not conclusive enough for me. This said it had created some interesting replies :)

Spot on. This was an absolute killer in my last job and there was no solution. The MD couldn't even use Google, I kid you not!

So basically you'd alienate the new person by refusing to help them and also try and grass them up to your bosses? Charming!

So you'd not want somebody better, that wasn't local?

    That's almost racist.....
