Tax credits overpayment

Several years ago I was overpaid by a crazy amount of tax credits. (HMRC mistakenly recorded my income as £0 and paid me a whack of WTC and CTC, which arrived in my account before I got my notification)
When I immediately offered to pay back the money, I was told that the money would be collected back by witholding future payments.
Happy days - I thought - an interest free loan courtesy of HMRC mistake.
For the past few years the amount I owe them has been declining as HMRC have clawed back what they gave me, but it appears that I am no longer eligible for any CTC payments and they are not going to renew my claim.
Is it better if I ask them to renew it anyway, even though I will not receive any payments?
I have heard that doing this may keep the original "claw back" arrangement that was agreed at the time and that in the future, should I become eligible for tax credits again, the money recouperation would recommence.

If you are not eligible for CTC payments they will write to you and ask you to pay the outstanding debt, you can pay monthly by DD over the tax year and if after that tax year has ended and you still have outstanding debt you phone them and ask to continue the DD.

They won't wait until you are eligible for CTC to claw back the overpayment.
