Acer Laptop won't shut down or start up

hi there I have restarted in safe mode and pressed the F8 button and up popped a screen with ~Windows at the top with the following details:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: Bluescreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: **** (4 numbers don't know if I should show)

does this shed any light? Can't see where the advanced options are to try the option suggested above

i've somehow stumbled on the option to restore to factory default settings so am doing that - fingers crossed.

thanks for your help everything is fine now. However I was unable to do a back-up disc during the restoration as I didn't have any discs. Can I do this at a later date and is there a particular disc I should buy. thanks again

yes you can, dvd +/- R's
