we have checked his credit record and all the defaults have either expired or he has cleared them and they no longer on there. We did all this before applying as we knew it would affect the application.0

It takes a week if, and only if, you are already a British citizen, and you've already had a passport before!
If the OP's future husband is an Indian citizen with Indefinite Leave to Remain, then he would have to apply for naturalisation, assuming he's been in the UK on the right dates, had ILR long enough, and has no criminal convictions, and is of good character.
Then he'd have to have a naturalisation ceremonry, if the application is successful.
