I'm with primus (awful, so i am not renewing my contract)
i'm currently on income based JSA so i think i would be eligible for BT basic.
does anyone know if you can just call BT and apply for BT basic straight away as a new customer, or do you have to be an exisiting customer and then apply to change tariff with them?

You need to have a BT line before you can apply for BT Basic.
http://www.bt.com/includingyou/assets/downloads/BTBasic.pdfWhat if I don’t have a BT phone line?
If you don’t have a BT line, you will need to change to BT before you can get BT Basic. You may have to pay a connection charge to do this. But depending on your circumstances, you can pay this charge over a period of time. Please ask us for more details.
