Best second bank account?

Hi all,

Lately I've been very disappointed with Barclays, who I bank with. Six months ago I reduced my £3000 graduate overdraft to £2100, thinking this was a 'sensible' move. Last month my partner and I relocated to London to start new jobs the following month. My plan was to simply extend the overdraft back to £3000 to keep me going money wise until I start my job.

Barclays submitted my application to extend, 10 days later I still hadn't heard back from them so I went in branch and was told it wasn't even submitted by the sales clerk I talked to. Annoyed, I then re-submitted an application in branch which was unsuccessful. Then, the clerk suggested I apply for a 'pre-approved' credit card if I only needed temporary funds, so I did. Today I got a letter saying my application was unsuccessful.

Now I'm considering other options. My question is can I open another current account with a different bank and apply for an overdraft on that account? I would use the account to pay my wages into also. Does anyone have any recommendations?

well generally it's a bad idea to much about with bank accounts.. just keep things simple unless change is essential

increasing or obtaining an overdraft is credit rated so whether you will be give an OD with a new bank depends upon their T&Cs and your credit worthiness
bear in mind many a/cs will only offer an OD once you have banked with them for 3 months or more

what do your credit records say ?
    what is your income?
are you on the electoral roll?

    Thanks for your swift response.

I am not sure about my credit history, it may be a little bit bruised. Income is around £12000 a year and I'm not yet on the electoral role where I live, I will sign up today.

best to check out your credit history
but with a low income and no electoral roll entry you are unlikely to get an OD on any sort.

you can get the statutory report for £2 per credit agency or they do 'free' trials but make sure you cancel before the months up
