Hi to all,
Tried yesterday, but no replies, maybe it is just a daft question.
Can anyone out there recommend a small tablet pc, or an E Reader?
My husband struggles to read black on grey, or small fonts. We would like to start reading e books, the house is full of paperbacks!
We are looking for something reasonably priced, able to change the font, colour of font and crucially the background colour. We have a netbook and a PC, so the main use would be for reading anything else would be a bonus.
Can anyone help, please!

you can use your existing netbook and desktop as e readers, you just need to install some book reading software. you can do some directly from the browser. Personally I use my smartphone as an e reader and I have it configured so I can read it easily. I also have difficulty with reading black on white and I have many paperbacks I can no longer read (Damn ageing...)
However, if you want to buy something specifically for reading books then Amazon Kindle is the best.0 -
what is reasonable priced in yoru books?
ereaders your looking at ~£100-150 usually no ability to change colours (that i know off) but font style and size can be changed, less strain on the eyes, battery lasts long time
tablets ~£200-600 would expect you can change colours font and size (although make sure you check before you buy as the app's might not allow it) less battery life, harder on the eyes due to the backlight
really i would suggest you pop into somewhere like PC world and have a play with some of the options and then come back and see where else you can get them from as only your OH will know if he is comfortable with the screen of each oneDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
Definitely agree you should try reading from an Amazon Kindle. The screen technology is completely different to colour screens in ipads and the like.
Give it a go and see if you like it, no doubt a great purchase for book reading as that is what it's designed for0 -
Hi there,
Many thanks to both of you for such quick replies.
bayness0,
Don't have a smart phone, and screen would be much too small, my husband can still read paperbacks, but the house is full, and he won't get rid of them! We looked at a Kindle, but he struggled to see it, too much of a strain to read for any length of time. I know we could use the PC or the Netbook, but they are hard to take to bed for a quick read before sleep and even more difficult to fit on the back of his bike to take to work! I love the idea of lots of books that could be stored on SD cards or internal memory!
gonzo127,
If you can't change colour of screen or text on an e reader it is probably not going to work for my husband, so I guess a tablet may be the answer, I have seen some that have similar dimensions to an e reader. I like your idea for trying some out, would have liked to get one as a surprise for hubby, but that may have backfired!
Reasonable price would have to up to about £150.00, only really want to use it to read books, so no good paying for a full blown computer, we can download books from the PC. So really it only has to be able to store the books, display them so that my husband can read the text easily and be easily transported.
You have both given me food for thought, I will try to drag hubby out to check out what is on offer at the weekend.0 -
