Student Loans Company (part MXCVIII)

Options
I paid around £150 towards my student loan in the 2003/2004 tax year, but it still isn't showing in my statement for the tax year 2005/2006, or any other statement. I have contacted them about it before now, but they just sent back a standard letter saying it would be taken into account when the Inland Revenue sent them the money. Of course, if the Inland Revenue hasn't sent them the money by now they never will.

I'm all for threatening them with the small claims court to get the money (and accrued interest), but just want to know what anyone else here thinks?

If you have a student loan, it might be worth making sure that they take into account all your payments.

Thanks.

Hi there Counte Dante - I work in a payroll department and we have had a few employees with similar problems.
When we spoke with the inland revenue recently, they claim they have a backlog of payments due to the Student Loans Company.

I am assuming that you have paid via your salary to the inland revenue? If so, you will have the deductions on your payslip and you will be able to prove to the student loans company that they have been deducted. Your payroll department should be able to supply confirmation that they payment has been made to the inland revenue also. I would also get in contact with the inland revenue to find out why the money has not been sent - again your payroll department should be able to give you the number of the appropriate office.

As I say, I beleive they have a backlog of payments and the student loans company are probably aware of this.

    Hope this helps.

Funny enough.. I haven't had my 2006 statement yet, I've sent off asking for it enclosing my P60. I've also send 3 payslips for an ICR predicted date.

I hope I'm not gonna have the same problem!

I got my 2006 statement recently & read with total dismay that just less than half of what I paid went in interest :(
  • I paid off my student loan completely. It was a pain as the interest is calculated daily. It cost me about £20 or so faffing around because the debit card payments would not be accepted for such huge amounts (surely they would know this?). Then I sent them a bankers draught. The Halifax were kind enough to waive the fee on this as I explained that them rejecting the payment and the time taking for the cheque to clear would cost me in Interest! Eventually I was in credit and received a cheque from them SLC to clear the balance!
