Santander application problems

I have an Alliance & Leicester mortgage and I recently applied for a Santander Zero current account (without credit card) but the application was rejected.

I suspected (and on phoning confirmed) that the issue is that the Alliance & Leicester mortgage account number is 11 digits ... but the online form takes 8 or 9 ......

Has anyone successfully applied online for this account using their Alliance & Leicester mortgage account?

If so which 9 digits did you use?

There are alternatives to applying online, as you don't have a Santander mortgage account - http://products.santander.co.uk/bankaccounts/zerocurrentaccount.html:

Santander savings and A&L mortgage customers who meet the eligibility criteria need to apply via Branch or over the phone

Doh! I saw that bit but it just didn't register since I'd clicked apply from the A&L site ..... thanks.
