Unfair Park and Ride

On Saturday I went to the Park and Ride in Cambridge, the ticket machines were out of order.

So had to pay full fare on the bus which is an extra 30p.

Many people were upset because they normally have the right change for the machines. Not only did not have to wait to get on the bus they had to find the extra money to buy a ticket.

Why could the Park and Ride operators charge ticket machine fare when machines are out of order?

They make no more money on a day to day basis so why charge people for a their problem.

It turns out machine was out of order for a few days.....

But over a few days and a few hundred passengers they would have made a nice bonus!!!

I suppose they think "well, it costs money to fix the machines"

Yes but is that the customers fault?

They are a real problem, one is usually out of order at any one time. Some have problems accepting coins.

The bus company and the council operating the P&R scheme are not the same. The bus company contracted by the council most likely gets a subsidy on fares from the council based on the number of tickets produced. As they cannot produce tickets for the parking, the bus company doesn't get the subsidy.

It might only be 30p but over a number of days and possibly hundreds of passengers it will soon add up.

Fair fare is all I ask.

Indeed. The bus company who is already running on a shoe string can't afford to lose that amount.
