BBCHD / BBC HD Audio Dropout Problem - does this mean we can return our TV sets ?

I noticed a strange audio clicking whilst on BBCHD channel on my newish Sony TV. I had no idea what to make of it and luckily was only zapping and simply watched something else.

Then I stumbled across this thread on Sony's site: BBC HD Audio droput when switching from 1080p to 1080i

It seems there is a known issue which falls between two stools i.e. the BBC are apparently causing it by complying with standard HD broadcast specifications but in a certain way, and Sony (and some other manufacturers) have perhaps been caught by surprise by the certain way the BBC have implemented the 1080p to 1080i switching in a dynamic fashion so it can switch continuously rather than perhaps just at the beginning of a new programme. It generally means that for an unknown number of programmes broadcast on BBC HD (apparently not on BBC1 HD or on the commercial channels) the broadcast may simply be so interrupted by constant switching that it is unwatchable.

Some on the Sony thread are saying this means that most Sony Freeview HD tv's are therefore not fit for purpose and that they can be returned for a full refund.

I imagine with the constant reduction in price of this type of tv and constant improving of tv spec that this might suit many people just fine and I may be one of them.

I imagine that Sony might easily feel hard done by if there is a run on returning Sony Freeview HD sets. If their CEO was Michael O'Leary then he might soon be resisting and trying to change the law on the basis that people can't expect a Sony Freeview HD set at a rock bottom price and then return it used after a few months claiming a full refund because BBC HD are broadcasting in unforeseen but legitimate ways :rotfl:

Anyone else seen this ?

I did indeed only pay £430 for my DNLA compatible set in the new year and am otherwise rather pleased with it and with the internet tv and USB movie playing ability. I could probably get a better one now for £350 though ;)

you may not get a refund, since a problem like this can be solved with an updated firmware for the TV.

Give Sony a few weeks to sort out all its PS3 woes (har har!!) and you'll probably find a firmware update that you stick on to a USB then plug it into the TV and power cycle it.

Or it may come "Over the Air" so one day you'll wake up to find that your TV works fine...

Well on that thread I linked to, they've waited a month now :(

What's a reasonable wait to for a supplier to replace something that's not fit for (some of its) purpose? :p
