Using Chip and Pin in NY?

I've got myself a Halifax Clarity credit card which I intend to use in NY soon, will I be able to use Chip and Pin or do I have to start practising my (dodgy) signature?!

I have never used chip and pin in the U.S. Signature every time accompanied by ID.The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

I echo that about signatures. I queried this before we went in February and there is no chip & pin, just signing for everything you use a card for.

agree - chip and PIN isn't in use in the US, at least not at all widely - some places only require a signature - some require photo ID and signature...most that I've been have required ID so best to have photo ID on you.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0

Yes, signature every time - though many places don't even check the signature especially for small purchases. They give you the card back before asking you to sign the receipt.
It's always a good idea to have photo ID though. Many Americans don't sign the card and use photo ID to back up the card.0 -
even if your card is signed they can still ask for photo ID...I'm sure I read somewhere that Americans are resistant to the idea of Chip and PIN as signature + ID is viewed as being more secure...Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0

The problem is more that the banks in the US don't want the expense of implementing such a system.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

been to the states 6 times in the past 4 years and used my card a lot and only once I've been asked for i.d and that was when I was buying a diamond ring for Mrs PB's 40th, the other oddity is they tend to have an electronic signature pad and i've had shop assistants lean over and just put an "x" in the box they dont seem that fussed about card securityLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
