Forget about the Sony thing for a moment. I think the data theft hit 95 million people, but this site hasn't been swamped with knock on claims of fraud.

What type of fraudulent transactions have taken him overdrawn? Cash? Debit card? Direct debits?

If debit card, who are the retailers?

On what grounds are Nat West refusing to reimburse? Why don't they believe it's fraud?

If he's decided to use the Sony thing to go on a spending spree and then cry "fraud" he's made a big mistake. On the other hand, if this is a genuine fraud and Nat West are refusing to settle, he needs to understand why and then pursue a complaint.

I think your son has over spent and is using the Sony thing as an excuse.
Sony have said there has been no evidence at all from any user in the world or credit card/banking company that has had money go missing.
Once it can be seen in black and white how the money has actually been spent you can then take it from there.

Natwest have put procedures in place, should the Sony incident have affected any customers.

They have taken it very seriously and kept staff informed with any updates.

If I was your son, I'd do what opinions4you suggested and go through the transactions thoroughly.

I'd do it asap aswell, as if it turns out not be fraudulent, he will be getting charged for going over his overdraft.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

The only fraud here is your son... looking mummy to cough up for his over spending.

The sony issue affects email and identities but they have clearly stated that peoples bank account details are NOT affected.

There is a potential truth to the fact that the Sony credit card database has been fully compromised especially as there is talk of it being sold. However what is strange is that Natwest would refuse to refund the money, typically the fraud will come from either a different country or somewhere your son never purchases (e.g. ATM in Manchester whilst you live in London or O2 topup ect ect).

You need to find out why Natwest are refusing to refund your son. Maybe he's being a bit economical with the truth ? If the transactions are fraud, they HAVE to refund.
