Areas in Swindon

Hi we are moving to Swindon and coming to look at some new builds the areas they are in are Wooten Bassett and Wichestow off Croft Road.
Can anyone tell me what these areas are like please and also are there anymore New build estates as we are very interested in a new build.
We would ideally like them to be very close to the New B&Q Distribution centre as that is where me and hubby will be working.
Thanks Oggy

Royal Wootton Bassett I think you'll find. ;)

Wootton Bassett is outside of Swindon and will probably take about 10-15 minutes to get to B&Q (assuming no traffic).

Wichestow is between the Old Town area and the M4 motorway. You'll need to watch how much noise you get from the M4 (depending upon where you are in Wichestow).

The general rule for Swindon is don't live in a Swindon district that begins with P (such as Pinehurst, Penhill, Park North or Park South).

There are a number of new developments in the North of Swindon that may be worth you looking at. Abbey Meads and St Andrews Ridge, although not brand new housing estates, are only around 10 or so years old and so there are no hidden surprises that you may get with a new build.

Hope it all works out for you.

hi many thanks for your help that has helped us lots thankyou. we are looking for a new build but we could also be looking to rent so we will steer away from anywhere that begins with a p. We are looking to come down mon, tues and weds to have a scope around the area and look at some new builds and to view some rented accomidation. What are the local papers to look for so i can buy and have a browse for new builds and rented.

The local paper is the Swindon Advertiser - it has some adverts for rented housing in the back but not many, usually. If you're looking for rented then you're better off parking in the town centre and walking up Commercial Road, and registering with as many of the local agents as possible. We've found they tend not to call you back, but if you physically go into the offices you're more likely to get viewings, and often you can view places on the same day.

Tbh, if you're working at the new B&Q centre then both Wootton and Wichelstowe will give you something of a commute in the mornings. Swindon's not *that* bad for traffic but they're doing a lot of major roadworks in the town centre at the moment and that could make for a longish commute through town in the mornings -for Wichelstowe especially you'd have to negotiate Old Town (I think, I'm never sure where the new roads are going lol) and that can be a little slow. You might be better off looking in North Swindon, as suggested. There is quite a lot of new development along Thamesdown Drive so it might be worth going along there and calling into the sales offices - can't remember the names of the developments but you can't really miss them.

The Swindon Advertiser is the main local daily paper that you can buy. That contains a property section; however I don't know which day(s) they dedicate to the property. The Swindon Advertiser has a property section on it's website that is likely to have the same houses as it includes in the paper.

To be honest, it may be just as easy to look on Rightmove.

Commercial Road in the centre of Swindon has a lot of estate agents on it and is also a good place to start - in addition to visiting the new developments just off of Thamesdown Drive in the north of Swindon.

I agree with the other poster about the noise levels at Wichestow. North Swindon is nice. If you are looking to rent there are a few Estate Agents up in the North Swindon area. If you stop off at the Orbital you can pop into the library & ask for a free map, there are also 2 estate agents there (opposite the library, down from blockbusters), then continue along the main road, head for Readhouse village centre for another Estate agent & finally back along the main road & head to Taw Hill for another estate agent.

Good luck with the hunt, when will you be moving down?

Just following on from jackomdj, there is also an estate agent in the Abbey Mead village centre (another part of north Swindon) located off of Thamesdown Drive.

I left them out because they are the same firm as Taw Hill & Taw Hill deal with the lettings side of things! We have just pulled out from a sale with them & we will almost definitely be using them to let our house in a couple of months....they are a good company as far as estate agents go!

    It's Redhouse not Readhouse.

    Touche!

No problem. As Jackomdj, Callie22 and me are such nice people, I trust we will all be able to get a discount at the Swindon B&Q from the beginning of June. ;)
