Cheap and cheerful but fully functional DVD Recorder in WHSmiths

Frankly, for fifty quid, it's worth every penny imho. The Bath branch has them behind the counter upstairs, no idea if it's a one-off or something, but it works a treat :)

    Oh - you'll be wanting the details I expect...it's a CyberHome DVR 1600
(There's a big brand name if ever there was one)

OK- SO I PUT CYBERHOME 1600 into Google to get some reviews. Try it.
In the US, CyberHome 1600 stock has been siezed and their California HQ closed for copyright infringments. Their Web site went off the air in June 06. Several sites have reports on this.
So service might be a problem!

Don't know if it is! Moderators?
Above is the moderators reply to my request for someone to post multi-region DVD instructions for ASDA DVD players on this site -if its legal.
No medals for bravery here Gollom!

Amazon however do post instructions on their web site on how to convert their DVD recorders and players to multi-region. Just look for this line, below the product write up.

<For instructions on making this product multi-region capable, see here.>

Maybe the US and European companies are decoupled or something - the European site seems to be up still...http://www.cyberhome.de/en/Article16.html. Actually, wouldn't WHSmiths have to honour the sale of goods act anyway? Just a thought?!

Interesting about the Chapter 7 bankrupcy in the states though!

edit - don't know if it helps, but just discovered a firmware update issued 29/9/2006 for the 1600, so some part of the company must still be somewhat alive!

Makro have an ALBA DVD62XI Region 2 compact DVD player for £14.99 +VAT on sale (total price £17.61). Is in the new Makromail.

    link here

Dont know if this one can be made multi-region.

Loads in stock at Makro Halesowen tonight (open until 10pm every day now until Christmas, and interestingly giving away free gifts like salmon and wine if you spend over £30!)

Don't buy Alba DVD players. I know they are cheap but are seriously bad. Cheap stuff in Asda is better by a miile (durabrand etc).

I've had bad experiances with Alba products too. However I am now in the market for a new compact dvd player as my durabrand broke after 6 months and although Asda refunded the money, they no longer stock the compact model that fitted so nicely under my 14" TV in the bedroom.

Anyone know of another cheap compact DVD player?
  • I bought a £20 Technika player from Tescos - it lasted only one year.

I have just replaced it with a £29.99 Toshiba SD-160 from Sainsbury's. It seems to be very good. Seems very good so far.

Multi region hack is on the following link

Ebuyer has to have the best offer out there for a multi-region with the extra bonus of DIVX. A Wharfedale 3210 DIVX DVD Player. Not only does it play DVDs, but if you have a bit of a divx or xvid collection going on, you can watch it on your telly rather than on your computer screen, just burn it to a CD or DVD first. This also has a cool blue display, some players at the low end of the market don't have a display at all. Its £19.99 inc VAT and delivery starts at about a fiver but goes up to nine pounds if you want it on the 24th for some reason.

    You have PM

BTW - I have sent information to at least 6 people and not one person has confirmed it works or said thanks!! Not looking for undying gratitude - but the odd thanks for my PM would be nice!

Haven't confirmed it works yet, as I need to retrieve my lent-out non-Region 2 disk ... however I noticed a previous post saying the Amazon item was multi-region - and "don't believe what it says on the tin" ...
so I'll try it before I change it, then see...
