I haven't ever needed to ask for thanks ... they just come along of their own accord if you are helpful. If people are ignorant enough to ask a question and then ignore the answer, or criticise the person who answers it, or (even worse) criticise their right to express their opinion (which is a common enough trait on MSE) that's their prerogative and I'm not going to get over-excited about it.

Since you are so desperate for thanks that you actually ask for them I hve thanked you. Please do not thank me in return.

I have thanked you. Not because you thanked me, but for the lesson in humility! ;)

  • In the wake of the Farepak debacle I'm surprised that the building society sector hasn't offered a series of Christmas savers for 2007.

I suppose it's because they knew they would be accused of cashing in on a disaster.

So I really mean it's a pity their dozy managements weren't aware of the Farepak type of market beforehand and didn't offer a decent product to help Christmas savers. I have to confess that I was also unaware of the scale of the Farepak and hamper savings market (with all its associated inefficiencies, poor value and lack of guarantees :(). But it is surely an appropriate area for mutuals to expand into in future.

The best product for Christmas saving for 2007, now, IMHO is the Yorkshire BS 6.75% Regular Saver because you don't have to wait for 12 months before making your one permitted annual withdrawal. [i.e. this is the one to use unless you are prepared to delay your next year's Christmas shopping.]

And also the account doesn't close so you could continue to use it for Christmas 2008 etc.

There are already quite enough regular savings accounts on the market, many of which offer loss-leading rates.

The banks are not going to fall over themselves to market them to people who aren't very interested in saving, and only saved with Farepak et al because of the moral pressure of an agent asking them for the money every week. It's that reason that made hamper type savings schemes successful, not the rate of return which doesn't bother the customers at all.
