Washing Machine plus Tumble Dryer or combo?

My mother currently has separate tumble dryer and washing machine units. She is thinking of replacing these as they are on their last legs.

Generally speaking, are combo tumble dryer/washing machines as good as separate units? IE should she go for separate units or will a combo unit be just as good?

Thanks

Separate every time if there is room. Washer dryers are a compromise where space is limited

Are they actually going wrong or not washing very well? If they are pretty old then she may be best keeping them to be honest as in general build quality of most newer models will not stack up in comparison
  • Thanks, I'll tell her to get separate units.

Having said that, in what way are combo units inadequate compared to separate units?

I have a combo - the washing machine is fine, but the tumble drier is rubbish. Absolute waste of... erm... time!

All it does is warm up and spin about. It just comes out steaming. Not dry. And it takes ages to even get to that point. Don't bother. Waste of money.

Sometimes they will only dry half the amount it can wash

Currys and Dixons usually have a deal if you buy both
  • Thanks, looks like it's separate units then. :)

Everything is breaking down in my house at the moment:eek:

I've just purchased an AEG T56840L condenser and it's brill.

But got mine from Electrocentre for £275. Tel No:0121 554 1878.

Currently out of stock, but as it's summer they might be getting more in soon.

Can't help with recommending a vented one though.

I wouldn't recommend a comb, especially not a hotpoint WD860. I've had so many repairs done to mine. I've spent a fortune on insurance.

Is a condenser tumble dryer 'better' than a 'normal' tumble dryer? Any disadvantages?

Or is the only advantage that it doesn't need an outlet hose?

Depending on how you install the outlet hose, if through an open window, in winter the room will be colder and you would probably need to be in while the window is open

Mine is in the garage sitting on top of fridge as was my other for over ten years!

Advantages:Can be used anywhere, just plug in, no hose needed, it collects the water and you empty container down the sink.

Disadvantages:Might use more electricity, but my bills are not too bad. More expensive to buy and more can go wrong.

    This is a great site:

Had vented in the past but would use condenser even if I have the choice between vented and condenser.Lot less faffing about and hoses have their disadvantages.

I'm very impressed with the AEG. It senses when the items are dry. Initial programme might set itself for 2 hours, but programme finishes after 20 mins depending on weight of clothes.
