Housing Benefit whilst on apprenticeship

Hi, i am a single 20 year old female and im currently unemployed and have been for around 10 months and receive job seekers allowance and housing benefit. I live by myself and only just manage to live and pay my bills on £54 a week. I have been looking at doing an apprenticeship which pays £75 a week, i was wondering if i would still be entitled to housing benefit whist on a apprenticeship. If not there would be no way of me being able to pay my rent, council tax, utility bills as well as travel costs on just £75 a week. Can anyone help?

You will get a 50% reduction on your council tax charge (you need to apply to the council tax department for this) and then you can claim council tax benefit and housing benefit. The easiest option is to speak with council and ask them.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

it is not very difficult to find the answer you just ask the council.. no need to all the angry faces kalil676, just use google.

  • Hi Ki33ie

Wondered how you'd got on as my boyfriend is 24, currently on JSA and rents a room so gets Housing Benefit (at LHA rate of £50) and has been offered an apprenticeship to start in a week at 30hrs @ £2.60 rate so £78. Wondering if he will continue to get Housing Beneift at same rate or if it will drop?

Also does anyoen else know if you can claim workign tax credits whilst on an Appreniceship? Know you can't generally at 24 without kids, but he'll be 25 in August.

Housing benefit (paid to social housing landlords) and LHA (paid to private landlords) is on a sliding scale, consult either the turn2us benefit calculator, direct.gov or your local council (most have 'claim housing benefit calculators' on them. you may qualify but it based on your circumstances, therefore you will need to go onto one of the calculators, or speak to the council.
