Basic bank account - help?

I had a basic bank account with HSBC, which I was happy with, however they have now cancelled my account as I had three DD payments returned, which is fair enough.

I can't get an account with Lloyds TSB or Barclays as I had accounts with them and owe them money (due to unemployment), so I've just applied online with Natwest but was denied a basic account due to 'bankruptcy' (debt relief order).

I wasn't aware that having a debt relief order would prevent me from getting basic accounts. But I had no problems getting my HSBC account with a debt relief order, and as with basic accounts there's no credit involved I didn't think it would be a problem.

I applied online with Natwest as I'm autistic and can only apply in person if I have someone accompany me, would applying in person at a bank make a difference?

As HSBC gave me no notice (they had over a month to do so) I only found out about my account being cancelled yesterday, I've had no chance to rearrange payments or set-up another bank account so I'm panicking now. Which banks would give me a basic bank account?

Please help, thank you.

Co-op's basic account now comes with Visa debit, but yes your best bet would be co-op or Halifax easycash

Its also worth mentioning that Co-op also operate a "3 strikes and you are out" policy, so if you go for this account, you will need to manage your finances so you dont go overdrawn or have bounced dd's

I would go for the Halifax Easycash account, they don't offer the 3 strikes and out policy as most do for basic accounts.
I have had the above account for approximately 3 years now and have missed Direct Debits & Standing Orders but it has never been closed or even discussed. I do pay 2000 in a month to it however, not sure wether this has a baring or not. However the online banking with Halifax is very good in my experience (some people may differ). The choice is yours but my advice would be the Halifax Easycash. You can apply online at this link: http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/other-bank-accounts/easycash/ Good luck!

Barclays are also reputed to be helpful in situations like yours.
