Overdraft Bank Charge - Claim help

Hi,

I have been stung with a £150.00 charge from HSBC for going overdrawn on my current account, could you give me any tips/advice on whether I can claim back based on the below circumstances;

As I was on holiday I was unable to pay off my HSBC credit card to avoid interest payments - to combat this I set up a direct debit from my current account to my credit card on the 30th day - all seemed fine. When I got back off holiday I didn't think anything of the matter until I checked my account online and realised I had gone overdrawn - what had happened was there was an automatic direct debit on my account already which was processed the day before the direct debit I manually created therefore two lots of the payment went out of my current account to my credit card leaving me overdrawn.

I called the bank to explain the circumstance and although I understood that it is not technically a banking error they said there is nothing they could do and its a "justifiable charge".

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received - many thanks.

    So long as the charge is taken in line with the published tariff of charges, then they can justify it. If they won't refund the charge, the only real thing you could request is for them to look at the charges on the basis of financial hardship. However, you would need to meet specific criteria for this. Further information can be found in MSE Martin's reclaim article. (Tab at the top of the page)

    Thanks for your help. I will try and call cancellations to see if they can throw a bit more weight around - alternatively I could join another bank get the £100 starter bonus to cover some of the charge!

    I think the OP may have difficulty in proving financial hardship here, zppp, as he gives the reason why he incurred the charges originally was due to him going away on holiday (presumably abroad) ;)
