Money in France, should I bring it here??

Hello,
Sadly my French mother died in April and I have just found out that she had taken out an "Assurance de vie" in my name (french life insurance with 7% interest) I now have a fairly considerable amount of money in a French bank and I don't know what to do with it. If I bring it over here, am I liable to some kind of tax? If I bring it over where is the best place to invest it? We are thinking about buying a property in France and eventually retiring over there so would I do better to open some kind of French savings account and if so which one??
Any help and advice would be very greatly appreciated,
Cheers
