Problem with Alliance and Leicester... Santander chasing up the issue

In 2007 I took an account out for an online current account. I was 18 at the time, and I gave my bank details online to transfer my salary and my direct debits.
I recieved so much paperwork within 2 or 3 weeks, I couldnt be bothered with transferring so I rang up and asked to cancel everything off. before the direct debits were set up. I was told over the phone by a guy that everything was cancelled. To ignor any further correspondence and to cut up my card.
Alliance and Leicester decided to take the direct debits but not take my salary, so I incurred charges as I didnt want an overdraft.
After a few months of complaints everything went dead, (I didnt know how a proper complaints procedure went, I thought they just closed everything down)
3 years later I had letters through from Santander saying I owed them £400 in fees!
I had no letters or emails from Alliance and Leicester.
I sent my complaint into Santander who told me I am liable for the charges. They enclosed a leaflet about taking the complaint to the Financial Onbudsman. so I have contacted them,
But has anyone else had this kind of problem. I watched a tv show I think it was called rip off britain and there was a woman on it who near enough had the same situation as me, she was paid compensation... and I am left with noe a £500 debt!.
Help!
