We paid around £1800 for the 3 days work - it didn't feel like a particular bargain at the time. Another local builder had quoted us around £2300 for the work which would have included replacing all the guttering and painting this, as well as the chimney work.

There was no mention of payment at the time of the conservatory advice.

You say “conservatory advice”, what do you mean by this?

If he helped you design/clarify what you wanted and the best way to achieve it and you then used that as the basis for going out to tender to other builders then it’s certainly arguable that he should be paid for his time.
  • Your well shot of him

There are some jobs that say ' we have lots of work lined up ...' and want a cheap price with a carrot of future work
This guy seems to have charged the rate (or more than that anyway)

There are many dodgy builders out there and you seem to have a narrow escape- did you google him when you took him on?

He doesn't have a leg to stand on with regards to the bill, so I would ignore it.

ps - you should know to always listen to the wife........ they're always right :D
    baldly going on...

You have two choices really. Pay up or ignore him. I'd do the latter. I certainly wouldn't enter into any correspondence about it.

    Cheers

But only if he has a contract established, whether in writing or purely verbal. Otherwise, beware of builders making suggestions as a pretext for claiming consultancy fees
