Tablet or E Reader for poor vision

Hi there,
Can anyone help, my husband has pretty poor vision, but has shown some interest in E Books, we are both book mad! We have a PC and a Netbook, but would like something smaller, like an e reader, the netbook is a bit hard to handle when having a read before going to sleep! However, he has looked at a Kindle and struggled to read it! Something that we could change the font, font size, and crucially, the colour of the text and the background. He finds it a strain to read black on grey.
So can any of you lovely people make a suggestion, don't really want to spend a lot, it doesn't need to be able to do much more than store and display books, anything more than that is a bonus. Someone suggested a small tablet may be a better option than a pure e reader.
