So confused

I was on the 4 week run on oftax credits and in the third week I was offered a job which I took up but my daughters helalth needs have changed (she receives dla at mid rate care) and her future health is dependant on surgery this is resulting in alot more hospital visits etc. I contacted my employer and informed them that I was unable to give a time scale of how long things will take to be dealt with and as I could not commit to work at that time we mutually agreed to wait until her health is managed better. So after a week I was unemployed again.
I did inform tax credits the day I actually started the new employment but similarly I also told them the day I finished working, I said as I was in the four week run on I did not want to receive another 4 week run on cos it is just far to much hassle getting things stopped and started again and it is really the last thing I need to be chasing people up on the phone etc.
They said as the change happened within the 4 week run on then it probably would not affect much and it would be unlikely that I would then continue with another 4 week run on.
I am still receiving tax credits as i was when I was working, I have phoned them up telling them I am sure I am not entitled to this money but they just say they have records of the changes and that is how the system is calculating my payments, they know I am not working and they know I am not requiring childcare but the system is authorising the amount to be paid.
I am totally confused!
