Where to go for a day out?

Hello everyone,

Well it's almost that time of year again, my hubby's birthday that is, and I'm thinking of taking him out for the day/overnight.

He's in reciept of DLA MRC HRM so obviously he can't walk too well and tires easily. I too find it awkward to walk certain distances.

Does anyone have any nice recommendation's for days in Manchester or the North West though we would travel further than that for the right place? In the past we've managed to get to the NEC in Birmingham.

He likes comedy, animals, science (especially astronomy). He also loves books, technology and history.

Because I also have Meniere's Disease neither of us drive so it has to be somewhere we can get to on the train and preferably without loads of steps or elevators (panic attack if I even think of getting in one) as I can't cope with heights either due to the risks of falls.

Thanks for reading and for any pointers.

we loved the museam in the center of Manchester, one overlooks the corrie set and my son was so excited to watch them filming story lines 3 or 4 months ahead of whats on normal TV.

And he liked the other part of (I think the peoples museam complex) where they had the poop bags for astronauts lol.

Near the Science Museum is the John Rylands Library - which will interest anyone into books and history. It's been recently revamped, so I'd expect it to be accessible.

The World Museum in Liverpool is good too - lots to interest most people. It's across the road from Lime Street Station and is free to get in. A lift services all floors, though. If it is use, you can ask staff to take you in the goods lift! You can't see out of the goods lift, although the main public lift is made of glass. there are a few other lifts that are available, but not to every floor - but they are not glass. The top floor is devoted to space.

The World of Glass in St. Helens is about five minutes walk from Central Station - the history of glassmaking, including a video type thing. Some of the tunnels are not very disabled friendly, but most of it is fine. The cafe sells lovely homemade food and is reasonably priced (about £5.50 for a decent dinner). It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I find it interesting and it is different to the other museums that I have visited. It costs about £6.95 each - I don't know if there are discounts for disabled people or their carers, but it would be worth asking.

Jodrell Bank in Cheshire might be a bit difficult to get to, but is probably an astronomer's dream! It's only about £2 each to get in, but I've no idea about public transport.

Spaceport on the Wirral is supposed to be good, but I haven't been there yet.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester currently has a Harley Davison exhibition if your OH likes motorbikes - it's about £8 entry to this, but the rest of the museum is free. It's close to public transport.

Wherever you decide, enjoy your day!

Aww lovely, thank you everyone. Kingfisheblue The World Museum in Liverpool sounds perfect for him and is definitely worth s visit. I'll just have to gulp and close my eyes in the lifts. It can't be any worse than the giant escalators at the NEC, now that was a sight to behold i.e. me clinging onto this poor disabled man for all it's worth. I'm surprised I didn't get arrested for public indecency. :o

I'm having a good old nosey on the internet at the other places mentioned and because some are free we'll probably be able to visit more than one place, not on the same day but maybe the same week. :j

So thanks again everyone. And if anyone else has any good idea please feel free to add them here too as I'm always looking for something to help him keep busy and interested.
