Advice regarding Architect costs

Hi I am planning to do a single storey rear extension on my 1930's semi and have been offered the services of a recently quilified architect who will produce the drawings for 'cash in hand'.
What I was trying to get advice on was what sort of cost will this be? and what things would I be losing out on if proceeding this way?
Any help or advice appreciated

I don't know for sure, but would you be protected by his professional insurance if you needed to rely on it?0

First you need to clarify if this is an Architect (ie RIBA or ARB registered) or just a technician. An Architect will charge a great deal more than a non-Architect.
There is nothing wrong with cash in hand, and you lose nothing in terms of protection. As far as you are concerned, you are still paying for a service at an agreed price, and it is he who takes the risk with the tax man
Cost will (should) be between £500 and £1k. You need to be sure exactly what is to be done for the fee ... eg planning drawings, building regulation drawings, amendments, site visits etc. And you need to ask what other costs are likely ... council fees, structural engineers fees, water authority permission, Party Wall Act notice etc0
