how does/what does spybot do?....

in Techie Stuff
when i got my first ever pc i was told to download spybot and avg... anyways i do a scan every week of these both and never had any problems... but what do they do... i know avg pick up and destroys virus and spybot checks for hackers but is that it? 
i know its vital to have these i you go online etc but its just beyond my imagination of how much these programs do for us in regards to safe guarding my pc... what would be the harm if you didnt use these ever? thanks for any advice/knowledge from a very untechie person :rotfl:
