Hi
I was wondering if anyone could tell me why my tax code has changed this year...i have been at my current job for 18months and in Feb this year i started paying into a company pension (4% of my pay pa). I earn 22K pa and last year my tax code was 647L.
I got a PAYE notice telling me they were changing my tax code and that i was only getting £526 for my allowance...is this right and if not how simple (haha!) will it be to get them to change it?
Any help would be great!
Kind regards
Corinne

Sounds to me like you may have (or the tax office may think you have) benefits in kind such as private medical insurance, a company car etc. Did you get given a form P11D last year - this would have detailed anything of this nature. Because the tax office wouldn't have known about this for the first year of your employment they have to collect the tax you should have paid last year plus the tax on the benefit during this year - hence the big restriction on your code.
If you only get basic pay and nothing else then it sounds like an error so check with the local tax office.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
Thanks Dave, in a previous Job in 2009 i was given a P11D as i had a fuel allowance. But in my new job i do not recive anything like that, I didnt really pay any notice to the PAYE thing until my pay check was £100 lighter this month!! I will give them a call in the morning i think! Thanks again!0

Have a closer look at the P2 Coding Notice, it explains why HMRC have set that tax code.
The details should help you to explain to HMRC why the code is wrong.

Thanks. the coding says 'we know you have another job or pension. We have used some of your allowances to give you a tax free amount at this job or pension' it says they should send my a PAYE notice for the job/pesion but they havent...i hope they do change it as £100 a month less is something i could really do without seeing as tho they have just stopped my Tax credits this month as me and hubby now earn too much (3K too much :-( )0

I wonder if HMRC are deliberately fiddling the tax codes hoping people don't notice or are plain rubbish. I have heard a number of similar examples this year of people having their tax code randomly (and incorrectly) changed and guess what they are all paying more tax.
Definitely worth everyone looking at their tax codes. Naturally, there may be some (I doubt many) that are underpaying and they will be silent. Still its very frustrating that HMRC is not fit for purpose as they say."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -
I called them this morning and it turns out the code was completly wrong! I should have been on 747L, they thought i had a company car (I wish!!) and load of other perks! The guy said i should get the Tax back in my next pay which will be nice, but i wont count my eggs just yet!!0
