Need to drill a hole in an outside wall

I'm a complete DIY novice but willing to have a go. After waiting a year for my husband to put an eyelet on the outside of the house so I can have a 2nd washing line I've run out of time and patience.

So tonight I've found the eyelet, raw plugs and drill and I'm going to do it myself tomorrow morning! I have a couple of questions.

1. The raw plugs say 12mm on them, is this the size drill bit I need?
2. How do I know which drill bit is a masonary bit?
3. How do I know when I've drilled far enough into the bricks?

I know these are proberbly stupid questions :o but I want to get this right.

Thanks in advance

    1. Yes
    2. Masonry drill bits have 'ears' on the pointy end.
    3. As deep as the rawl plug is long or as deep as the thing you are screwing into it is long (if longer than the rawl plug.)

Wrap a piece of masking or insulation tape around the drill bit at the depth you want to go to stop you drilling too far in.

    Good advice.

Also clear out the dust from the hole after you have drilled it. If you don't the plug may get stuck part way in.

Sometimes it helps to drill a pilot hole first with a smaller diameter bit rather than diving straight in with a 12mm.

masonry drill bits have tungsten carbide tips. sometimes colored on the end.

And you need to use the HAMMER setting on your drill or you may burn out the cutting tip.

if your house is concrete as above, you will need a SDS drill. a hammer drill isnt enough.

    (usually PRC council houses).

Because few men have any interest in washing (clothes;)).
