The usual suspects Vatican/Museum/Trevi Fountain/colosseum. We also did the Scavi Tour which, if it is of interest, is fantastic. However you have to contact the Vatican to request permission for this tour as there are only a limited number of people allowed per day.

There was much that we did not get to see but that just means we have to go back.

    Trip Advisor is your friend
  • been to rome a few times, its hard to find a reasonably priced restaurant with good quality, atmosphere and people watching ability.
the main squares you will pay high prices for poor quality, last time i went i paid 7 euros for a thimble of red house wine (piazza navona nov08)

i like the area south of the piazza navona (between piazza navona and piazza de campo flori) for eating and drinking, (its slightly cheaper and a little studenty)

i think my favourite land mark is the trevi fountains, kept on going back in the day and at night its really pretty, although can be crowded.
i also like the vatican museum and if your are that way on a wednesday morning st pauls the pope often does services, i saw Pope JP in.
walking over the tiger towards the spanish steps from the vatican is nice also.
the colliseum is expensive but OK..

enjoy its one of the few european capitals i'dgo back to along with berlin, madrid.

Watch out for pick pockets :( Particularlly on public transport.

As Inca says above, tripadvisor is the site you need to check out for recommendations.

Definitely watch out for pick pockets, especially children and be ultra wary if you use the subway, they are very quick are running on and grabbing things and hopping off before the doors shut.

I would recommend the hop-on hop-off bus tour as a good way of saving your feet and getting about.

The Pantheon is a must. As is the ice cream.
