Delaying MOT

My daughter's car is on the drive, fully taxed and insured but the MOT runs out in a couple of weeks. She's away at uni and won't be driving the car until the Summer. If I delay the MOT for a week or two, will I extend the date or will the new MOT still be a year's worth from the date the old one expired? (Sorry, I have worded this very badly, but hopefully someone will get the gist!)

If you delay the MOT till after the current one expires, then the new certificate will run for 12 months from the actual date of the test.
Don't take the car off the drive after the MOT expires until the day you take it for its test (pre book an appointment in case you get stopped on the way to the test centre)0 -
I would MOT as normal, as she may need it unexpectedly and if you have let the MOT lapse then it will need to be prebooked for the MOT, you could do it early then you will still have the same annual expiry date.
In my experience if the MOT and Tax don't expire at around the same time then it could lead to your daughet forgeting the date the MOT runs out and inadvertently driving without MOT.
Although letting it expire when not in use is not illegal, but remember that if the car was stolen from your driveway then an Insurance co may value a car without a current MOT at less than one with a current MOT, as there is no way you can say it was in roadworthy condition, I know an MOT is no proof of roadworthyness, but why take the risk of them trying it on.
They do try it on and will.0 -

I formed the suspicion that MOT and Tax expiring at the same time was a factor in MOT failures by certain national chains so MOT'd my car six months early to separate them. I could be wrong of course but it's not just insurance companies trying it on and separating the dates removes one temptation.0 -

how did you work out that 'certain national chains' fail your car because there is no tax? what a load of nonsense.:pBe Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

I've never heard so much nonsense. However, wouldn't it have been far more efficient to just tax it for six months, rather than waste six months of MOT?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
