Foreign Commonwealth Office Warning !

Booked 2 week holiday in Turkey in June 2011. FCO advise at the moment is .. against all but essential travel to 4 places .... what does this mean ?

I spoke to travel agent and she fob me off saying nothing on First Choice web about this . I told her its on FCO which she never heard of !! How strange !

There will be 8 of us going family and I m slightly concerned if it is still showing this warning .. what am I able to do ? I just found out that Turkey election on June 12 maybe some unrest will arise as well as recent news ..

against all but essential travel to ...... means ? ? Travel agent told me nothing to worry about !! ok for her but its my money and family

Read this very recent thread off the Istanbul discussion forum on Trip Advisor...

...Turkey is a secular, democratic country. The reason it's having elections is because it's a democracy.
16 million foreigners visit the country every year, and those that encounter any troubles are 0.0zilch%.
Enjoy you holiday in a wonderful country!
  • Big country Turkey.... the advice is:

We advise against all but essential travel in the provinces of Hakkari, Sirnak, Siirt and Tunceli and visitors should remain vigilant when travelling in other provinces in south eastern Turkey.

Are you going to any of these province? Might be a bit like planning to visit Cumbria and being told not to visit Sussex ... best get a map out

If you are going to practically any popular tourist resort in Turkey, you are literally a thousand miles from the areas of unrest mentioned by the FCO.

    Enjoy your holiday :).

Exactly what it says - do not travel to any of the areas listed unless absolutely essential (and a holiday can hardly be classed as essential)
