I have two small houses together worth approx £180,000, yet after a varied of expenses I only return about £9,000 in rent a year, before tax. Anyone suggest a better return for this kind of money?

5% is not a bad yield IMHO.
You may be able to better it with S&S investments, which in the longer term have gernally returned more than 5%. However, which particular investments you should invest in is really the important question.

Don't look at what they are worth, look at how much you owe on them or how much you paid for them.

Yes, consider an IFA but always get a second opinion, there are thousands of them and they all have quite distinct points of view, some focus of what is best for them.0
