I painted mine last year because we couldn't afford new carpet and it's a rented house. I just used some leftover satin finish with a gloss white edging. The main colour has worn slightly but it just seems to add to the charm... which might be my way off saying I'm too lazy to repaint them!

When I moved into my house 15 years ago I carpeted the rooms but could not afford the stairs done, it has a bend and a half landing so would have been too expensive. So I painted it, stencilled the up riser & it looked great-lots of admiration from visitors. Since then I could have afforded carpet but have continued to keep it painted, much cleaner & easier, just a quick sweep & mop & it’s as good as new, and when I see how much I sweep down & mop off with kids & cats the carpet would have been ruined & would have needed a couple of replacements by now. Never had any problems with slips either & I've only used ordinary gloss paint.
