  • this was the thing - even though he's bought it via ebay hes paying cash on collection nxt week, so that really is the day of the sale.

Anyway, emailed him my predicament & he's gonna insure it from today (apparantly he works in insurance) so hopefully all is well. Will obv keep hard copies of the emails etc in case a problem occurs

Call the DVLA, ask them...... Do exactly as you are told and preferably record the phone call.

You can check the car's insurance status here...

I'm not sure how quickly the data updates though. However, I doubt even the DVLA will quibble over the odd day. Especially as the new rules have just come into force.

Not sure if the new law is in force yet,as there is nothing definite on the dvla website, just says 'from' early 2011

    I do have my doubts.

How hard can it be for them just to give a date?

What about buying an annual insurance policy on a credit card, then invoking the 14 day cooling off period? - although check beforehand how much in "admin fees" this will cost you.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Put a car cover over it. Then the DVLA ANPR vehicle can't read the plate and if they can't read the plate they can't check it against the database. Boys in blue won't be interested in it anyway if its not on't road. Simples.

    Cheers

How is that going to stop the insurance database being cross referenced against the tax/sorn'd database and an automatic letter being sent out with the details of the fine?

Both the reminder for the tax on one of my cars and the insurance renewal letter on the other had sections covering the requirement for continuous insurance or SORN.

I've been wondering about this because my old car is sat on my driveway uninsured but still taxed. From asking the internet I thought the rules hadn't come in yet but now I'm not so sure. In any case I thought they were going to send out insurance reminders rather like tax reminders before issuing penalties...
