Problems on sons laptop

Just go the following email from my son describing the problems he is having with his laptop - can anyone help?
Upon installing the SP1 Windows 7 update, my system restarted itself and began to install the update. The installation goes well for a brief time, but then stops and an error code (C0000034) appears on the screen, causing the computer screen to freeze and then go blank.
I am forced to restart the computer, where I am given the option to repair the error. I select this option but after the computer claims that the problem is fixed, the same error code occurs when I restart.
I am also given the option to perform a system restore on this repair screen, however when I select this option it seems as though the computer does not register it.
I know for a fact that I have system restore points on my computer as I have used them before to recover work that I have forgotten to save, but as there is no way of accessing system restore I can't undo this problem.
This is apparently a common issue and I can't find any help from Windows themselves on how to resolve it.

The laptop is not allowing him to get to those options - he is now trying a diagnostics boot-up0
