Hi, I would like to start and run a forum on the net but I'm not sure where to start.

Are there any 'off the shelf' products that can do this?

I'm pretty sure this forum and a lot of others use vBulletin, but I believe that costs money. Depends how serious you are....

You first have to know what features your hosting has. A previous poster suggested a PHP based forum, but obviously if your hosting doesnt have php then you cant run it, same applies to Perl and to databases, some forum software requires them, some dont

You can do forum hosting for free (proboards)

The more professional ones like this forum cost money, you can use free forum software like PHPBB but will need to host it (either with a webhost or your home PC)
